PORTAGE PORPOISE SWIM CLUB
Parent Code of Conduct
As a parent of a child in the Portage Porpoise Swim Club, I agree to always conduct myself in a manner appropriate with the philosophy of the program. I also agree to be guided by the following code of conduct:
~ I will discuss issues with the coaches, the Board of Directors and individual Board members in a calm and rational manner.
~ I will encourage positive sportsmanship between all swimmers and opposing teams.
~ I will remember that the purpose of youth sports is to promote a healthy lifestyle in children through skill development. Competition, while a part of the sport, is not the sole reason for the sport’s existence.
~ I will be a positive role model for my child and encourage sportsmanship by showing respect and courtesy, and by demonstrating positive support for all swimmers, coaches, officials, families and spectators at every meet, practice or other event.
~ I will not engage in any kind of unsportsmanlike conduct with any official, coach, swimmer or parent, such as booing, taunting or using profane language or gestures.
~ I will not encourage any behaviors or practices that would endanger the health and well-being of the swimmers.
~ I will teach my child to follow the rules and to resolve conflicts without resorting to hostility or violence.
~ I will teach my child that doing one’s best is more important than winning, so that my child will never feel defeated by the outcome of a meet or his/her performance.
~ I will never ridicule or yell at my child or other swimmers for making a mistake or losing a competition.
~ I will emphasize skill development and practices and how they benefit my child over winning. I will also de-emphasize competition in the lower age groups.
~ I will promote the emotional and physical well-being of the swimmers ahead of any personal desire I may have for my child to win.
~ I will respect the officials and their authority during meets, and will never question or confront coaches at a meet, and will take time to speak with coaches at an agreed-upon time and place.
~ I will refrain from coaching my child or other swimmers during meets and practices, unless I am one of the official coaches of the team.
